Protecting Maine's legal consumers is one of the primary missions of the Board of Overseers of the Bar.  Every lawyer admitted to practice in the State of Maine is required to follow a code of ethics and rules issued by the Maine Supreme Judicial Court.

Complaints are taken seriously. Each written complaint is reviewed by the office of Bar Counsel and investigated if it involves alleged misconduct by a Maine attorney. Complaints that do not allege misconduct in violation of the Code are not subject to the grievance procedure, although, if they involve fees, they may be appropriate for the Board's Fee Arbitration Commission.
