Status Categories

  • Active: Attorney is licensed to practice law in Maine.
  • Disbarred: Attorney is disbarred and is prohibited from practicing law in Maine by order of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court.
  • Emeritus: Emeritus attorney may practice law in Maine to provide pro bono publico services to the indigent through recognized legal services organizations.
  • Inactive: Attorney is inactive and has completely discontinued the practice of law in Maine. Inactive attorneys are prohibited from practicing law in Maine, although such attorney may have active status in other jurisdictions.
  • Judicial: Attorney serving in a Judicial or Case Management Officers (CMOs) capacity at a state or federal court.
  • Resigned: An attorney under investigation for attorney misconduct may seek to resign from the Maine bar. If approved by the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, the Attorney is prohibited from practicing law in Maine. Note: Status ceased to exist on 7/1/2015.
  • Surrender: An attorney under investigation for attorney misconduct may surrender his or her license. If approved by the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, the Attorney is prohibited from practicing law in Maine.
  • Suspended (Administrative): Attorney is suspended from practicing law in Maine. The suspension is a the result of the attorney's failure to properly register with the Board.
  • Suspended (Disciplinary): Attorney is suspended from practicing law in Maine. The suspension is a the result of disciplinary proceedings.
  • Withdrawn: Attorney is inactive and has completely discontinued the practice of law in Maine. Withdrawn attorneys are prohibited from practicing law in Maine, although such attorney may have active status in other jurisdictions. Note: Status ceased to exist on 7/1/2015.
